Preventive Dental Care

Protect Your Smile for Life

Gentle Prevention Starts Here

I truly believe the best dentistry is the kind you never need beyond routine care. That’s why I’m passionate about preventive dentistry for my Erlanger families. Regular checkups and cleanings are your smartest investment—they catch small issues early, so we avoid bigger problems, pain, and expensive fixes later. I’d much rather see you smiling at a happy six-month visit than dealing with something that’s progressed. Even if something’s brewing, early detection means we can handle it gently and conservatively.

More Than Just Teeth

Thorough Checkups

Every six months, I don’t just look at your teeth and gums—I examine your whole oral health. That includes a full oral cancer screening (checking neck, jaw, lips, tongue, cheeks, throat—everything). Caught early, oral cancer has an 80-90% cure rate, and I’m always happy to do this screening at no extra charge. (For self-check tips between visits, visit checkyourmouth.org.) I also check for abnormal wear, teeth grinding, or TMJ issues so we can address strain before it causes bigger damage to your teeth, jaw, or even overall health.

Removing What Brushing Misses

Professional Cleanings

Our cleanings go way beyond polishing. To prevent gum disease (the #1 cause of tooth loss), we remove tartar—the hard, mineralized plaque that regular brushing can’t touch. I use hand tools and, when needed, an ultrasonic scaler (vibrating water stream to break it up gently). If early gum issues are present, we clean below the gumline, smooth roots, and help your gums reattach healthily. The goal? Keep your smile strong and your gums tight where they belong.

Extra Protection Where You Need It

Fluoride Treatments

Fluoride strengthens enamel against acids and bacteria that cause cavities. While tap water and toothpaste help, many folks (kids, those on certain meds, cancer patients, or adults with receded gums/exposed roots) benefit from my professional-strength treatment at every checkup. It’s quick, applied directly (including to roots), and builds a stronger shield for your teeth.

See What I See

Digital X-Rays & Intraoral Cameras

We use low-radiation digital X-rays—instant, clear images on screen for better diagnosis, easier sharing, and safer for you and the environment. Plus, our intraoral camera lets you watch along: a tiny wand shows magnified, full-color views of your mouth right on the screen. You’ll see exactly what’s going on—no surprises. It helps us spot early problems (especially silent ones like gum disease), celebrate your good home care, and team up on the best next steps. Many patients say it’s eye-opening and empowering.

Brighten Safely & Comfortably

At-Home Teeth Whitening

For a brighter smile without office visits, I offer take-home whitening trays with professional-grade gel. Wear the trays for 20 minutes daily over 10-14 days (after cleaning your mouth), and you'll see noticeably whiter, youthful results—safe for enamel and effective on stains from coffee, tea, wine, or smoking. Results last longer with good habits: brush/floss well, limit staining foods/drinks, and touch up as needed with gel refills. It's affordable, private, and gives that confident boost many love.

Shield Those Grooves

Dental Sealants

Sealants are a thin, protective coating painted into the deep grooves of back teeth (especially kids’ molars, but great for adults too). They block food and bacteria from settling in hard-to-clean spots, cutting cavity risk dramatically. It’s quick, painless, and long-lasting—perfect prevention for growing smiles or adults prone to decay.

Your Daily Home Routine for a Healthier Smile

Oral Hygiene Instructions

I always tell my patients: Professional care is essential, but what you do every day at home makes the biggest difference in keeping your teeth, gums, and breath fresh and healthy long-term. My recommendation is simple and effective—thorough cleaning once a day (ideally morning or evening, whatever fits your life best), and quick food-particle removal at other times (like after meals). Here’s the routine I follow myself every single day—and the one I teach my Erlanger families:

1

Floss First

Flossing removes plaque and food from between teeth and under the gumline—places your brush can’t reach. Use about 18 inches of floss, gently curve it into a C-shape around each tooth, and slide it up and down (including under the gum gently). Do this before brushing so loosened debris gets swept away.

2

Brush with an electric toothbrush

Electric brushes like Oral-B outperform manual ones for plaque removal. For a thorough daily clean, take 3–5 minutes (I still need that long myself to get it spotless!). Hold the brush head gently along the gumline using light pressure—let the brush’s motion do the work (no hard scrubbing). To avoid missing areas, follow a simple pattern: Divide your mouth into sections (upper right, upper left, lower right, lower left). Spend equal time in each, slowly moving tooth-to-tooth: cover the fronts, backs, chewing tops, and especially the gumline. Hold for a few seconds per tooth before moving on—systematic coverage ensures nothing gets skipped!

3

Finish with tongue scraping

My favorite step!  After brushing, I scrape my tongue to remove the bacteria, toxins, and debris that cause bad breath and contribute to plaque buildup. A dedicated tongue scraper (plastic or metal—available at drugstores or in our office) works far better than just brushing your tongue. A few gentle passes from back to front, rinse the scraper, and you’re done. It freshens breath instantly, improves taste, stimulates digestion/internal organs, and supports overall oral health.

Why this order? Flossing loosens stuff → brushing clears it away → tongue scraping polishes off lingering bacteria. For lighter times of day (after lunch/snacks), a quick brush or rinse is usually enough—no need for the full routine every time. Consistency beats perfection—stick to this daily deep clean, and you’ll see (and feel) the difference: healthier gums, fewer issues at checkups, and fresher breath all day.

Want more details on tongue scraping and why it’s a game-changer? Check out my blog post: Tongue Scraping: My Daily Ritual for Better Breath and Health (link to new URL once migrated). It shares my personal story and the benefits I’ve seen over 20+ years of never skipping it.
